Knight-Hennessy Scholars
Knight-Hennessy funds graduate study at Stanford and builds a multidisciplinary scholars community. You apply to Knight-Hennessy and to your Stanford graduate program — two gates, one cohort.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars (Stanford University) · United States (Stanford University) · Graduate (Stanford degree programs) · Full (typical package)
What it is
A Stanford scholarship and leadership programme for graduate students across degrees. Selection looks for independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and civic mindset alongside academic excellence.
Who it is for
Applicants to eligible Stanford graduate programmes (including some professional degrees). Citizenship is open; academic timelines and graduation-date rules apply — read the current eligibility page.
What funding usually covers
Typical coverage includes tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic expenses, and a travel stipend, for the length published by the programme.
How to apply
- Confirm your Stanford degree is eligible.
- Submit the Knight-Hennessy application by its deadline (often earlier than some department deadlines).
- Submit the separate Stanford graduate programme application by that department’s deadline.
- Prepare video and essay materials that show judgment, not performance theatre.
Documents people commonly need
- Knight-Hennessy online application and essays
- Transcripts
- Recommendations as required
- Stanford department application materials (tests, portfolio, research statement)
Typical timeline
Knight-Hennessy applications commonly close in early October for the following autumn cohort. Stanford department deadlines vary. Map both calendars on day one.
Practical tips
- Do not treat K-H as a generic funding checkbox. The leadership materials are central.
- Department fit still decides admission — scholarship interest does not replace a weak research match.
- Recommenders should know your work deeply.
Common questions
Do I only apply to Knight-Hennessy?
No. You must also apply to and be admitted by a Stanford graduate degree program. Both processes matter.
