Holland Scholarship
The Holland Scholarship is a partial award for non-EEA students starting a bachelor’s or master’s at participating Dutch institutions. It will not pay your whole life in Amsterdam — but it is searched every year as a real top-up.
Dutch Ministry of Education / Nuffic (with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences) · Netherlands · Bachelors and Masters · Partial (one-time contribution)
What it is
A national scholarship scheme financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch institutions. Participating schools select candidates.
Who it is for
Non-EEA students applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s at a participating Dutch university, who do not already hold a degree from an education institution in the Netherlands (check current rules).
What funding usually covers
A one-time award amount paid in the first year. It does not usually cover full tuition plus living costs on its own.
How to apply
- Apply for admission to a participating Dutch institution.
- Follow that institution’s Holland Scholarship instructions and deadline.
- Submit any extra motivation or forms the school requests.
- Combine with other funding plans — do not assume this award alone is enough.
Documents people commonly need
- Admission application file
- Motivation statement if required by the institution
- Proof of nationality / passport
- Transcripts and diploma
Typical timeline
Deadlines are set by each institution, often in the first months of the calendar year for a September start. Check your school’s page, not only the national overview.
Practical tips
- Treat this as part of a funding stack, not the whole stack.
- Institution selection quality matters — they nominate or choose.
- Confirm your programme is on the participating list for that year.
Common questions
Is the Holland Scholarship a full scholarship?
No. It is typically a one-year financial contribution (commonly €5,000). Budget tuition and living costs beyond that.
